Community Sculpting -- 2021

Community Sculpting is a clay workshop I did with food and talks. The workshop was specifically meant for trans people to connect and create together.

Fallafel, clay, community and a publication.

This poject was part of an assigment called Remake, Reenact, Reappropriate (the Re’s) and making (A) Public for Willem de Kooning academy.

Community Sculpting is a remake of a work I made last year named Identity Talks (May 2021). The idea of Identity Talks was to create friction by connecting, comparing and engaging in identity talks, in order to learn and grow from each others experiences and imaginations. In Identity Talks I centralized conversation. It is largely inspired by relational arts, as we were discussing this during theory at the time. Important inspirations are : Gillian Wearing with her work “I have been certified as mildly insane!  (1992–1993)”, Rirkrit Tiravanija’s  “untitled (free/still) (1992/1995/2007/2011-)” and Roxette Capriles’s “All you can Art”. The work included a tablecloth with a print portraying elements of my identity, several  colourful donuts, a book with pictures and conversations with different people  about identity, pieces and books that are important to me and places for visitors to sit.

At the time of the project I still had a hard time talking about my trans identity. I was not yet comfortable enough to openly acknowledge the fact that I am trans, which I respect and understand. In some ways, I still feel the same, and I am happy I did not rush to talk about this.

This year, however, I have become more and more comfortable with myself. My friends and I started going to Klauw parties, queer exhibitions and workshops by trans people. I realised how valuable these initatives are and how much they helped  me in this process. I would like to contribute to the community in this same way. After a workshop by Rae Parnell I finally knew how. It was a zine making workshop about your own trans heritage at ILHIA in Amsterdam. It was really good for me to meet like minded queer people outside of a bar setting. The space was comfortable and laid back, because you knew you  didn’t have to explain yourself to anyone. They are all going through the same things. This was exactly the kind of environment I wanted to create myself.
